The Watercolor Note Card and Gift Tag project combines embroidery on paper with colorful watercolor washes to create a unique and extra special wish for a friend! Here is Aimee's tutorial on how to create these adorable cards and tags that will make your gifts extra special.
What You'll Need For This Project:
- 5’’ x 8’’ (12.7 cm x 20.3 cm) piece of 140 lb cold press watercolor paper (for a card)
- 3 1/2’’ x 2’’ (8.9 cm x 5.1 cm) piece of 140 lb cold press watercolor paper (for a gift tag)
- Embroidery Floss: 1 skein each of DMC dark purple 3834, turquoise 807
- Watercolors and brush
- Hole punch
- Craft knife
- 12” (30.5cm) piece of 1/2” (1.2 cm) wide satin ribbon
- Thanks and 4u embroidery patterns
- Gift tag template
Embroidery Stitches You Will Be Using:
- Back Stitch
- Satin Stitch
Instructions
1. Use a craft knife to measure and cut the watercolor paper to the dimensions above. Score the card down the middle so it folds from the top to 5’’ x 4’’ (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm). Use the gift tag template to trace and cut the top point on the tag and the hole punch to make a hole in the top corner.
2. Paint colored watercolor washes onto the paper pieces as a background for your stitching. Use your favorite colors or experiment with blending more than one color together. There are no rules here, don’t be afraid to make uneven edges or smeary colors. Drip on more color while the paper is wet if it’s too light, or remove a bit of paint and water with a tissue if it looks too heavy or wet.
3. Transfer the embroidery patterns to the pieces using carbon paper, trace them on with a light source, or write the words with pencil in your own handwriting. Embroider the designs according to the stitch guide using 4 threads of floss. It will help to poke holes along the pattern line with your needle from the front of the paper so you can see where to come up from at the back.
4. Thread the ribbon through the hole on the tag and tie it into a bow, or onto a package.

Hermwork is sweet, fun, colourful and full of joy. I would love to have this new, charming book in my hands. The hedgehog pin cushion/dome would be first!

Ohmygoodness those cards are adorable!! So simple but would mean so much to the recipient…
And I’m dying over the tiny squirrel on the book’s cover!!
This book looks like so much fun. I would love to make some of these cuties.
